I am dedicated to my own evolution as a man, despite my regressions. I have spent many years trying to better myself through various means and over the last couple of years I have been attending Men’s retreats through the Men’s Center of Los Angeles where deep self introspection, awareness and evolution are nurtured and found in the hills of Malibu twice a year. This has been a life saver. Stemming from this experience, I started my own men’s group with some of the most amazing men I know - some of which are co-creators or contributors to this site (see below). I am the blessed husband to a very special woman, Jenniffer who is an esteemed psychologist, and a proud father to my beautiful almost 5 year old daughter, Bailey. Both of them constantly remind me not only of the important things in life but that everything is fleeting- so I should pay close attention. I am a Board Certified Family Practice Physician and play lead guitar for a female-fronted soul-rock band. I also make spiritual beaded jewelry which you can find at I am the luckiest man in the world to be surrounded by a community of amazing men and a wife and daughter who ignite my spirit deeply. Hey everyone – after a long and thoughtful process, I have left my cozy little job with all the security one needs (financially) to follow my integrity.  4 weeks ago, Willow Healing Center had its grand opening in Woodland Hills, California.

I believe in a few things when it comes to people and medicine:

We (humans) are complex.  We are physical, spiritual, emotional and psychological beings.  I believe that treating just the physical being is only part of the process…it would be like fixing a car and forgetting about the gas.

I have found that not only is the system in which we receive health care broken, but the guise in which doctors treat is severely broken as well.  I know.  My patient panel was over 3,000 patients and I was on the proverbial hamster wheel spinning away daily as patients came in and out of my office flustered and disappointed with their treatment (for the most part).  I was always one to spend the time needed with my patients but the 20 patients per day cycle became a suffering existence.

Therefore I have decided, with lots of thought, that something had to be done.  I decided that I was going to work for MY PATIENTS and NOT the insurance companies anymore.
The fix was simple.  Let’s get rid of extraneous “moving parts and red tape” offer value, time and a compassionate ear  and I can’t go wrong – even it it fail.

I started Willow Healing Center with my wonderful wife who is our in-house psychologist.

Our dream, since we met was to work down the hall from each other.  Well, check! that’s done.

The Willow Speaks

A friend of mine once said in a time of pain that he felt much like a willow branch blowing in a storm – not quite sure if he was going to break.

Do we ever really break? A willow branch is quite pliable. It can be manipulated into many different shapes, bent end-to-end in some cases and withstand significant internal and environmental stresses.  However, like most things, it has a breaking point if stressed too far. Watching From Afar!

The disconnected look into “enjoying” the suffering of others.

So, I was sitting here, flipping through my phone’s Facebook app this morning.  I found myself constantly swiping past multiple posts which were titled things like, “this man yells at his wife one to many times, and you will never guess how it ends,” or “watch what happens when this girl takes one step too far off a building – you won’t believe what happens,” or “Check out the ugliest pictures of people that should never have been taken.”  At this point, it’s like I’m hypnotized if I’m not paying attention.  Somehow, someway I occasionally find that I am drawn to this craziness – in a car-accident-curiosity-type of way.  Continue reading Watching From Afar!

Fruitful, Organic, Cage-Free Choices

Stop reading now!

Or continue.  It’s your choice!

OK here’s the deal.  Do it or don’t do it.

What’s “It?”

“It” is the fulcrum of your decision making –  It is the balance point in the “should I do this or that” thought process.  I think people forget that there is always another choice.  It’s part of our power as humans.  Not all choices however yield better outcomes.  Honestly, some choices just suck!  This article isn’t about how to make better choices, it’s about knowing we have them in general. The High Dive!

What kind of life do you want? For me it’s trying to be proactive, not allowing precious opportunities to pass and taking risks. It’s tough sometimes but it’s doable- that’s the essence of this article.

The Auscultation Meditation: How I meditate without anyone knowing

By: Michael Lewis, MD

If you haven’t figured it out yet, meditation is AWESOME! It is a chance to ‘try’ and silence that infernal thought making machine in your cranial vault! However, if you are one to see the word meditation and think, “No way! Not even close –I get it, I’m supposed to chant and sit with my arms open signing ‘asshole’ with my thumb and first finger?” (See pic below). Colon Cancer: What you need to know.

Colon cancer is a scary topic. I am sure most of you know someone who has been affected by this horrible cancer. If screened early, it is preventable, treatable and essentially curable.

Get this, Colon cancer is the Third leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States – following Lung and breast/prostate (women/men).  Here are some scary stats:

Third Eye or Magic Eye?

Have you ever seen those 3d Magic Eye pictures like the one above? Have you ever been so close to seeing it that the picture hidden in 3d makes a small appearance then escapes you for another frustrating 10 minutes? What’s even more frustrating is when you see it, then try to see it again later and you can’t! grrrr. This is a similar idea of what happened to me during my morning meditation today.
